Hi. Welcome to our latest blog post. We hope you are enjoying our content so far. Hopefully its giving you a better understanding of what we do at Cobolt Blue Energy and why we are so invested in educating the UK market about truly ethical and sustainable renewables.
In this month’s post we are going explore why cheaper solar solutions might not be all they are cracked up to be and how there may be hidden costs both financially and ethically.
Cutting corners on your solar investment might look like a win at first glance. But when you look closer at the lifespan, performance, carbon footprint and supply chain, the true cost of cheap panels starts to stack up.

The Real Price Tag – Financial False Economies
We understand that investing in greener energy solutions for your home or business can be a daunting financial prospect, especially when we are in the middle of a cost of living crisis. We know that every penny counts, so a low cost or ‘cheap’ solar energy system can seem very attractive, but will often fail to provide the return on investment people hope for.
Solar panels with a low upfront cost are often made from cheaper materials that are less efficient and have a much shorter life span so ultimately lead to costing more in the long run.
In addition to shorter life spans, a warranty might seem like reassurance but not all warranties are created equal.
Many low-cost solar panels come with limited coverage periods and vague terms or warranties that only apply under narrow conditions. Even if the paperwork looks promising, issues can arise when trying to make a claim, especially if the manufacturer is based overseas or has no UK office or authorised support network.
By contrast, Cobolt Blue Energy only partners with manufacturers that offer robust, transparent warranties and trusted support networks, so you have genuine peace of mind for the long term.
The Ethical Cost – Who Made Your Panels?
When it comes to solar panels, low price tags can sometimes hide a far more serious cost, one that isn’t visible on an invoice but carries significant human consequences. A vast proportion of the world’s cheapest solar panels are manufactured in Xinjiang, China, a region now globally scrutinised for its links to forced labour practices, particularly involving the Uyghur Muslim population.
One of the key materials used in the production of solar panels is polysilicon and around 40% of the global supply is produced in this region. Numerous investigations and human rights reports have raised credible concerns that forced labour is being used in parts of this supply chain, with workers subjected to harsh conditions under so-called “re-education” programmes.
Labour MP Sarah Champion recently supported proposed changes to prevent UK public bodies from using solar panels linked to forced labour, stating:
“This is the only way to make sure our transition to net zero is not carried through on the backs of slavery and exploitation.”
But this isn’t just a political issue, it’s a moral one.
At Cobolt Blue Energy, we believe ethical sourcing is not a nice-to-have; it’s a non-negotiable. If the products used to power your home or business are built on human suffering, they cannot be considered sustainable, no matter how much energy they save or carbon they offset.
The Environmental Cost – Dirty Solar Isn’t Green
It’s easy to assume that all solar panels are inherently good for the environment but unfortunately, that isn’t always the case. While the energy they produce may be clean, many of the cheapest panels on the market are manufactured in coal-powered factories, particularly in countries where environmental regulations are limited or poorly enforced.
When solar panels are built using fossil fuels, particularly coal-fired energy their initial carbon footprint can be alarmingly high. And if those panels are also lower in quality or poorly made, degrading faster than expected, the environmental payback is further delayed or in some cases, never achieved at all.
This kind of production creates a dangerous contradiction: a product marketed as part of the climate solution may, in reality, be deepening the problem before it even reaches your home or business.
True sustainability demands more.
Because a solar panel shouldn’t just be clean once it’s on your roof. It should be clean from the moment it’s made.
Solar must be part of the climate solution not just another carbon-heavy industry dressed in green wrapping.
What to Look for Instead
If you’re serious about investing in solar energy and not just buying into the idea of it, it’s worth asking a few key questions before making a decision. Questions like:
Where were these panels made?
What powers the factory that made them?
How long is the warranty?
Who is actually installing them, and how experienced are they?
These aren’t just nice-to-know details. They reveal whether a system has been designed with real sustainability in mind or simply built to meet a price point.
A responsible solar provider should be able to offer a traceable, transparent supply chain, backed by credible warranties and ethical sourcing at every stage. They should care just as much about what happens behind the scenes as they do about how the panels look on your roof.
That’s the Cobolt Blue Energy difference. We don’t offer off-the-shelf solutions.
Every product we use, from the panels to the batteries to the software that manages your system, has been carefully selected based on its performance, longevity, environmental footprint and ethical manufacturing credentials. We work only with partners who share our values, so you can be confident that your energy choices are as clean and responsible as they claim to be.
Yes, you might pay slightly more upfront but you’ll save significantly more in the long run. Not just in money, but in emissions, maintenance and the true cost to people and planet. When it comes to solar, price-per-watt isn’t the whole story. Long-term value, sustainability, and integrity matter just as much and that’s exactly what we deliver.
At Cobolt Blue Energy, we believe solar should be part of the solution not another problem. That’s why we work only with manufacturers and partners who share our values of quality, ethics, and sustainability. Cheap panels might look appealing, but when it comes to your home, your values and the planet there’s too much at stake to settle for less.
Thinking about solar? Ask the questions that matter. We’ll give you the power to choose better.
